Dream Closets

Ever want a closet large enough to sleep in? I have. There are so many great closets in the world. I think a closet should:

Be large enough to move around

Be very well organized

Have a place for everything

Be a fit for your design style

I have seen closets that:

Have a washer and dryer right in them

Are bigger than the bedroom

Have a "His Side" and "Her Side"

What is Your Dream House?

If money were no object, what kind of house would you buy. Really, think about it. If money were NO object. What if you had $100 million to spend? $200 Million? Or maybe these numbers are too big for you? What about $10 Million or even $3 Million?

My dream home is an apartment in Manhattan that was for sale for $70 Million. See the ad I printed off the Internet below.

I love New York City, and this would be a fun apartment to live in. It is a little big, but oh well. You can see the interior on the movie "Meet Joe Black" with Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins.

If I could not have that home, I would pick an apartment in the Time Warner Center on Columbus Circle on the Southwest Corner of Central Park. Since the most expensive restaurant in the nation is in this building, I would guess the apartments go for a pretty penny, too. Probably not $70 million though.

D-Junkie Spotlight: The Lime Advertising Agency Office

If you wanna talk Design Junkie, then this is it, because I am helplessly addicted to the decor at the office of Lime, a leading digital marketing agency with clients such as "Dog the Bounty Hunter" TV show. In fact, I am so addicted to their office that I am changing my text in this post to "lime green," their company color.

Here is a shot of the front desk. It is a little hard to see in this photo, but they have put up glass panels behind the desk to create a transparent wall. That is a very simple, and cost effective way to create a separate space, but in a unique and fun way.

Through these windows you can see the exposed brick in the outside hallway. What a fun backdrop to see everyday.

Their wood floors are completely unique. I believe they are original to the building which was built at the turn of the century. They are wide planks laid parquet style, and have been refinished for a polished look.

Their office is very open. They wanted no cubicles to encourage open dialogue and a free flow of information between team members.

The Interior Design Minute June 25th, 2009

Wide plank floors always add a special touch, because they look great but are not that common.

A bookshelf can be an easy way to create a wall and make a new room.

These rooms create a unique and fun perspective. The dark room at the end provides great contrast and a focal point.

A-Z of Interior Decorating: How to Design a Room

I have read many books and been to many classes on how to design a room, but I essentially use the process of my mentor, Lynn McGhie, for whom I have done work since 1990. His process is different than most and quite old school (no computer needed), but I have found it quite effective.

LYNN'S INTERIOR DESIGN PROCESS

1. Measure the Room

2. Lay it out on graph paper

3. Furniture layout (on graph paper)

4. Lighting Layout (on a translucent film that is laid over the graph paper)

5. Choose color scheme by basing it off of one item (either a rug, a piece of furniture or piece of art, etc.)

6. Select Flooring and wall coverings (these are the base of the design)

7. Select Fabrics, rugs, paint, etc.

8. Select Accessories

INTERIOR DESIGN STEP ONE: Measure the Room

Take a measuring tape and measure around the perimeter of the room. Mark where there are windows, doors, power outlets, fireplaces, etc. Below is an example from when I remodeled my living room.

INTERIOR DESIGN STEP TWO: Lay it out on graph paper

I now take the measurements and lay them out on graph paper. Each square on the graph paper represents one square foot. This helps you get a feel for proportion.

It is a little hard to see, but the lines in red are walls that we knocked down, but were part of the original measurement.

INTERIOR DESIGN STEPS THREE AND FOUR: Furniture Layout and Lighting Layout

If you look in the graph paper above, I already have the furniture layout. Also, I did not layout the lighting on translucent paper, because I did not do any electrical work, just added lamps. The lamps are represented by the "0" with the "X" through them.

INTERIOR DESIGN STEP FIVE: Choose Color Scheme by basing it off an item such as a rug or piece of art.

We actually based everything around the terra cotta tile floors we wanted.

INTERIOR DESIGN STEP SIX: Select floor and wall coverings.

The picture below shows the inside of the folder for the project where I have glued in the paint swatches and also a fabric sample for the furniture. It is hard to see in the picture, but the walls are are Sisel (Ralph Lauren Paint). That is a khaki color. The trim is Industrial Brown (Color Place - Walmart.)

We selected terra cotta tile for the flooring (also called saltillo tile or Mexican tile).

You can see the fabrics rugs, paint and accessories we selected in the after pictures below. We have changed the furniture layout since the original design because we bought a piano.
